giving psychology away

"our responsibility is less to assume the role of experts and try to apply psychology ourselves than to give it away to the people who really need it - and that includes everyone. the practice of valid psychology by non-psychologists will inevitably change people's conception of themselves and what they can do. and when we have accomplished that, we will really have caused a psychological revolution" (miller, 1970 [1969], p.16)
how beautifully george miller spoke in his presidential address to the apa almost 40 years ago... to what extent his ideas came into life is another question. psychologists still do close themselves behind the lab doors. they still hide in white robes. they still ooze more or less intellectual discussions in more or less academic journals. theory is only a first step. knowing is not enough. we must apply. and there is enough firm psychological knowledge accumulated throughout the last century, which only now slowly starts reaching the public; societal structures (e.g., schools and other institutions) and individual persons.
let's keep the course of georgie miller: give psychology away. let people utilize it themselves.
