warning(s)

the party on saturday was a blast. i still feel the hangover. but what i take more pride in is that we got the warning from the landlord as the neighbors complained. well, actually we got two warnings as apparently they complained last time too. (yes, that's the canadian way of dealing with things; never direct - i don't even know how these neighbors look like!) this means that we need only one more party to get kicked out. how exciting. but i don't think it will happen until the end of the semester anyways for mariam, gianma and myself will be extremely busy... so: breath in. i shall breathe out on april 19th.

tempo

"studiowałem we francji, w grenoble" opowiada martin.

no tak.

"przypadek adolfa h."

first day at work

booyakasha.

first day at work was fun, though i was expecting it to be a little bit more confusing. the kids were 5 year old and were great. curious but for most part quite attentive to the tasks i gave them. the result sheets got completed without any mistakes today!

the only lowlight of the day was the wake-up at 6.00am. that was rather painful.

viva la revolución! viva?

i haven't said a word about the ultimate new year's eve party. as last year i went to the party organized by vancouver solidarity committee with cuba (on main st.) to celebrate the 49th anniversary of cuban revolution. i took my mom too.

what could we, the people who suffered from the supposedly socialist system, say about this whole thing? well, first of all we had loads of fun. there were mojitos, cuba libres and cigars. a lot of salsa dancing to good beats provided by dj su comandante. to be totally honest, it was the first time i danced with my own mother!!

but coming back to the revolution. when everybody, including my mom who really got into the spirit, was shouting "viva fidel! viva la revolucion!" i remained silent. yes, i am a skeptic toward the cuban revolution, because it really is fidelian revolution. a revolution of a person, not of the people. having said this, i have a lot of respect for castro's ideas and achievements, but i believe that the society has not grown up to them yet. will they ever? that's a completely different issue.

but the enthusiasm and atmosphere cuba and the cubans seem to have are quite remarkable. i need to point to one comment which my mom made: "the polish people, and people of eastern europe never had enthusiasm for socialism or communism for that matter. soviet union for us was exactly what the u.s.a. was for cuba. political orientation did not matter. people used to go to work, vote, demonstrate etc., because they were threatened by secret police and the whole network of spies. in cuba the enthusiasm seems genuine".

but to me, regardless of the intentions behind both political extremes use exactly the same methods of maintain power: physical force. sad, but true. besides, people in general are not mature enough to see the middle point. they keep stubbornly believing that the only alternative to communism is capitalism and the only alternative to capitalism is communism. both statements are terribly false! when the world will start looking up to the scandinavian social democracy? when the world will learn from the scandinavian people how to govern justly and peacefully? good question.

below some pictures from the new year's eve:

all you need to know about vancouver

so my mom flew back to poland this morning. for last 2 weeks i have been showing her around vancouver. i took her to the tourist attractions like stanley park, granville island, gastown, robson street and all the sushi restaurants in the city, but didn't limit her to the tourist thing: "been there, done that, bought a t-shirt". we never took a cab, we went to hastings at main etc. in a way, i discovered the city myself again. (btw, it's true that the locals know their area the least/worst!). it was a good experience. a day or two prior to the departure she concluded:

yeah. vancouver is definitely worth seeing, but, for a european, difficult to fall in love with.

bingo. what else could i say? this is a sentence i have been trying to say for last three terms!

polska mamma in the city of vancouver

what can i say? i almost forgot that my mom was coming. that is i thought she was coming one day later. and then i double-checked her itinerary, good i had done it. i can imagine her freaking out on the airport if i hadn't come! ;-)

yeah, yeah, we are enjoying ourselves etc. etc. zubrowka, sausages, pickled mushrooms and other good stuff are here too. don't tell the customs.

oh, no, she didn't get tazored.

dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooone

finals at sfu are over only tommorow, but i have just finished writing my last exam. i am glad and relieved.

yesterday was terrible, though. i couldn't concentrate on anything - i felt like waiting for an execution. i knew the material, but felt bad about doing something unrelated to developmental psychology. but i did anyways. i surfed the internet, went for a long refreshing walk in the evening, and said 'goodbye' to leaving salome. i couldn't sleep the whole night. i am not sure why - anxiety? stress? excitement? too much coffee? whatever. it doesn't matter right now. i am done.

blissful days of doing nothing in front of me. and then my mum comes to vancouver, which shall be interesting.

booyakasha.

"polska zmienia zdanie ws. dnia przeciwko karze śmierci. - decyzję podjął w środę premier donald tusk - powiedział w brukseli wicepremier i szef mswia, grzegorz schetyna.

giving psychology away

"our responsibility is less to assume the role of experts and try to apply psychology ourselves than to give it away to the people who really need it - and that includes everyone. the practice of valid psychology by non-psychologists will inevitably change people's conception of themselves and what they can do. and when we have accomplished that, we will really have caused a psychological revolution" (miller, 1970 [1969], p.16)
how beautifully george miller spoke in his presidential address to the apa almost 40 years ago... to what extent his ideas came into life is another question. psychologists still do close themselves behind the lab doors. they still hide in white robes. they still ooze more or less intellectual discussions in more or less academic journals. theory is only a first step. knowing is not enough. we must apply. and there is enough firm psychological knowledge accumulated throughout the last century, which only now slowly starts reaching the public; societal structures (e.g., schools and other institutions) and individual persons.
let's keep the course of georgie miller: give psychology away. let people utilize it themselves.

confusion.

ever since my parents divorced and the temple of my wonderful childhood collapsed i have been confused. sometimes depressed, sometimes excited (hey... that sound like bipolar disorder, doesn't it?), but always terribly confused.

when i was 16 i was looking forward to the age of 18 when the adulthood officially begins. beyond, i thought, there will be answers or at least some directions. i was very far from the truth. i went to the lpc camps and later to uwc in norway. ideals were set up high and then very suddenly i was released into the world. the world that corrupts as j.j. rousseou would say. but i still learnt very little about it.

currently i am studying at simon fraser university. i am almost 21 and i am very aware that i am determining my fate right here and right now. yes! whatever i do now matters in the future. let's not fool ourselves with blissful "carpe diem". though, the problem in my head is of a different nature. i just seem not to grasp the wholeness of the reality. i go into one aspect of life too deeply forgetting about the other, equally important, ones.

and what's the worst is that i can't concentrate on here and now. i have no motivation. sometimes i think i wanna get out of the place i am currently in. no, i don't mean vancouver. it's more general. i can't stay in one place for long. i am too afraid i'd get attached...

for last couple of weeks i have been living in the future, trying to figure my life out. find a meaningful goal i could yet again strive to achieve. i can't see it right now. i am stuck. the confusion arises yet again. what am i doing? all i know is that i am tired of this term and i wish it was over. only one more week of classes and then the finals. hopefully, by then the sky shall be clear again.

final of football intramurals

los perros. upper row (from left): harm, grzesiek, marcos, brent, james, gilbert. lower row: francesco, brent, colin, evan.

in the finals we lost 2-3 to bio bulls. in the first half we were down 0-2. the last 5 minutes of the game were fucking exciting, though. gilbert scored a magical goal for 1-2. a minute later it was 1-3. unfortunatelly we did manage to make up the score in the last last seconds. too bad. it was a good team and good season, though.

teoria względności a komunikacja miejska w vancouver

hospital episode(s)

yeah. i don't even know how did my elbow get infected, but it did. suddenly i just couldn't straighten it. so i went to a physician who put me on antibiotics. great, i thought. here (in north america, i mean) they treat everything, even a cold, with antibiotics. so stupid of her. so stupid of me to have agreed. but over the last weekend my conditioned worsened and i was sent to the royal columbian hospital near sapperton skytrain station.

brrr! i realized i never have been to the hospital before. what a miserable place! so much pain, suffering and, worst of all, hopelessness all over peoples' facial expressions. i waited in queue for about 4 hours and then they let me in (mind it was an emergency waiting room). the doctor classified it as a bacterial infection of the soft tissue around the elbow. he called it bursitis or something similar and put me on iv (intravenous) therapy for a week.

yeap, i was getting my daily fix of antibiotics straight into the vain. and yeap, i was chilling around with a plastic tube in my vain. and yeap, i was waking up at 7.00 every morning (a habit i quite grew out of) to catch the bus to the hospital. and yeap, there were pending urgently deadlines i needed to meet. understandably, i'd like to forget about the last week.

right now i am still taking oral antibiotics but i am way better and the infection is almost gone. hurra! i can go for a run again...

an update for non-polish speakers

as ali g would say: "booyakasha"

what have my soul been up to recently? much, much. perhaps even too much. i have had such a crazy time coming back to vancouver and finding myself homeless. a friend of mine, piotr lutyński, let me stay at his place by sherbrooke street for the first month. great, free accommodation at good peoples' home. but commuting back and forth to the university took up to 3 hours a day of my precious time. pain in the ass; sometimes rather stressful when i needed to hand in an assignment or something.

having survived this first month, mariam and i finally moved in to a wonderful apartment at inlet drive in burnaby. bright, big and relatively cheap, what else students need? moving in was o-k, but time and energy consuming. we got a lot of free furniture and bought some kitchen stuff in almighty ikea. and so we have lived so far. organized a thanksgiving potluck (see some pictures two posts below). and then midterms started. within two weeks i had 5 exams. hey, it's already a second year, so there's no joking around. during that time i committed all my time to studying. still, the pressure of maintaining high gpa is on. i know that if i lose the scholarship, i go home.

now, the midterms are over and i got a little sick. in meanwhile i also have thought about a sense of direction. vision. where am i going right now? i have come up with some beautiful dreams. and i am determined to follow them. as usual. even if i fail and ridicule myself.

oto wyniki wyborów do sejmu z dnia 20 października z okręgu wyborczego numer 81 w vancouver.

liczba wyborców w spisie: 523
karty wyjęte z urny: 481
głosy ważne: 462
---
PPP: 3
LPR: 13
PiS: 240
PO: 177
PSL: 1
Samoobrona: 1
LiD: 25
PK: 2

i recommence soon, i promise

so, i have been back in vancouver for over a month now. many things happened, many things changed. this is the way life is, right? my dad asked me to start publishing on the blog again and so i will. soon, i promise. there's lots to tell, including the summer (past), my current situation (present) and my nearer and farther plans (future).
only let me pass my midterm exams. ;-)

home? home.

so i have made it. i am sitting in my living room, enjoying brand new wireless connection and slowly getting over a terrible jetlag. i have four points to make, really, so i cut the small talk and get straight to business:

primo: i am not gonna be writing over the summer, as this blog is not about my life, but my university life. i am, though, going to respond to letters, emails, facebook messages etc., so please do not suspend those. i will be back in vancouver on 28th of august, so only then i will recommence my blog activity.

segundo: plans for the summer are chilling, interrailing and volunteering in norway, quite close to the college btw. i really feel i have desrved this summer by eating shit and cutting my spendings over last term to absolute minimum.

tertio: the exam results have come out and yes, i am keeping my scholarship. all the best to everybody, wherever you are.

oh, and i am visitng the college this thursday with bakkerud and bunny. should be fun. will be fun. :-) takk for maten.

finals, rotary presentation, drinking and bomb threats

hello.
so much has been happening in last couple of days. i have written two final exams, in psychology and latin american history. i am hoping to keep the scholarship yet for another term... :-) then we had bomb threat on campus, which was quite ridiculously taken care of. i laughed when i heard about this, because the security tried to act seriously, but really they had no idea what to do. somebody must have gotten an inspiration from virginia tech. bravo. yesterdaty i was presenting to burnaby rotary club about the uwcs. they invited me for lunch, listened carefully and asked interesting questions. one of them actually told me i gave him a lesson on public speaking. interesting old gentelman. the same day, but couple of hours later i was slowly saying goodbye to my favorite places: commercial drive, davie street, gastown, chinatown, burnaby mtn park. also my german friend, steffen, left yesterday. on the same evening i had a bottle of finlandia with derek and salome. and that, i have to say, is never a mistake for spending time. now, as my room is a saigon and i am trying to unfrost the fridge, and do some laundry, and pack at the same time i am just dreaming of getting my ass on the plane. today is the last full day of my first year university experience. it was good. i started liking it, especially in the second term when i found some specific stuff to do.
ok, enough hangover mumbling. i shall continue packing and dreaming of flekke.

hello universe! goodbye universe!

"hello. goodbye. hello. goodbye." this is how billy pilgrim (was that his name?) used to greet people and this is how i greet you today. for life is an incredible and neverending chain of beginnings and endings, isn't it?

my second semester is almost over, and it's time to dream about the summer and how wonderful it will be (unless we blow ourselves up before i get a chance to taste, but this is a different, longer story)... being back in the paradise of lpc, travelling here and there, and there again. saying hello, goodbye, and hello again. embracing this wholeness of beginnings and endings.

for now, though, i shall better go and finish this essay for latin american history on a guy called hugo chavez. anyone has heard about him? ;-)

hastings at main

have you ever bothered to come to vancouver? have you ever wished you lived in vancouver? according to the ranking of famous magazines x and y you should have had such cravings. apparently it is the best city to live in on this planet. low crime rate, nice (never mind that sometimes superficial) people, green neighborhoods, organic restaurants and markets plus all the multicultural (well, mostly asian) components. oh, and it organizes winter olympics in 2010! wicked, no?

there is a place in vancouver, however, to spoil everything. EVERYTHING. there’s a place where capitalism shows its real (?), evil (?) face. hastings at main. there are myths about that intersection all around canada. people actually tremble when they hear "hastings at main". they tremble and change the topic of the conversation. vancouverites know what i am talking about.

hastings at main is the intersection of two quite important streets in the town. main street constitutes the heart of chinatown (second biggest in north america), while hastings street goes along the coast leading from downtown all the way up to burnaby mtn. and sfu (btw, i wonder how many pedestrians know what is meant by ‘hastings’… forgive the irony).

anyhow. intersection of hastings and main is the intersection where you don’t wanna go at night alone. it’s full of losers, talking in economic terms which apply to this country. it’s full of bums who eat and sleep on the street. it’s full of prostitutes and drug addicts. the rates of hiv and aids are highest per square meter in north america. generally speaking it’s very filthy and very, very depressing.

thought-provoking, too.

every time my bus pass along the hastings streets i take a look at these people. i wonder then who is to blame for their situation – themselves or the system they have been born into and against which they have lost. was it freedom that led them to degradation? surely, we could blame them: they live in canada, the country full of opportunities. their fault, let them have what they deserve!

but wait a second. is it really? the ideology of capitalism standing behind world’s economy and the idea of globalization will always leave the winners and the losers. we can observe on local and global scale; e.g. the us of a imposing free trade agreements on latin american countries or the bums on hastings. they have to be there, so other people can sleep at sheraton hotel.

but it is not injustice that pains me. well, that too, obviously, but it is the bc government action. as the olympics 2010 are approaching, they have to do something to the problem of hastings at main. godammit, it's almost the very center of downtown! "what will sportsmen, buisinessmen, and visitors from around the world think about our city when they bump into hastings at main!?"

good job, provincial government! you spotted a problem bothering your biggest city. now, what to do? what to do? let's displace them! that's right. they are displacing them, moving from downtown as far as possible. slowly, but steadily through buying the estates and "cleaning the street". bravo. but no banana.

apathy is one thing and this is what had been shown towards the bums so far. but now it is a reverse action! instead of real help they recieve a ticket to surrey. how narrow-minded can you be that this is not going to resolve a knot of hastings at main!? it's just going to shift it, and probably make it even bigger.

ps. you can't see hastings at main from the suburbs. you can't read about hastings at main in the media. you don't want to.

i can't believe how stupidly they test in this university.

i am alive. thank you.

i am alive, well and busy, but positive. i have a lot of good energy now, things to live into and things to look forward to. my existence makes just perfect sense. the world is still filled with magic despite all the frightening facts about our species in psychology lectures. you can smell spring in the air, too. smell of a new beginning and thousands of people to meet, million of possibile paths to choose. it's all so fucking fantastic, or isn't it?

so, yes i am all right, if you asked "how's it going?" but if you wanna know more, i am alive as never before. thank you for interest...

dropping economics and feeling relief

since the very first lecture i didnt like microeconomics. the professor was really, i mean really, boring, the class was full of blind-followers and above all there were some serious clashes between the philosophy (or rather lack of it) of rightwing microeconomics and mine own.

so i have been struggling within myself: drop it or not? a part of myself was telling me i'd be a coward if i dropped it. another part responded i'd be a cowards if i didn't. and this internal discussion (yes, i have a lot of them) went on for a month... until i realized that class drop deadline is tommorow.

so i dropped the bloody microeconomics.

i feel relieved. i feel light. i feel good.

wiersz/a poem

---

curiosity

and let my lungs lose all the oxygen concession
whenever my mind is left
with the following frighting thought:
that the only thing i know is that i don't wanna know any more

20.

eh. is that number cheerful or depressive? cheerful, i'd rather say. it's sunny outside and the air is very fresh. i can think of only one tune for today anyways:

the response(s)

wow. i must say that i am truly amazed by the power and influence of media.

yes, i always knew it existed; i had read about it, i had seen many documentaries with noam chomsky and gore vidal etc. however (and those who know me are quite aware of this), i am quite an empirical bastard and i never fully believe until i try myself.

publishing an article in vancouver sun was a discovery of what sort of storm can such a small feature cause both on my blog and in my mailbox. i have got emails from my zero-years in flekke (apparently someone printed the article and put it up on the noticeboard!), couple of polish students at sfu, rotary club in burnaby, piotr lutynski (with congratulations), a girl who wishes to get into uwc and so on...

this incredible discovery can be only compared with my complete astonishment at the mechanism of the tides on the fjord in flekke. before coming to norway there was just pure tidal theory. there was my physical geography teacher talking about the tide and the moon and where they interact... but it never occured to me that within a day fjord can back up 10-20 meters!

anyhow. time to go to class. have a good day. :-)
